Drystone ditched walls are a speciality of Woodview Stonework. From traditional Devon drystone bank ditched walls to stone faced earth banks that are typically found in Cornwall, we have built a large range of different styles of ditched walls for different purposes. These are for traditional properties such as Exmoor and Dartmoor homes, to farm boundary walls or ornate gardens in character properties. 

Typical construction includes hand splitting stones to form the walls and backfilling with crushed stone to create the infill to act as drainage, these drystone walls have stood the test of time. As they are natural, they drain water naturally unlike concrete based walls, last many times long, look fantastic, helps the environment as cultures develop within the walls themselves and are easy to repair.

Drystone retaining walls retain soil or earth that has been dug out. The huge benefit of a drystone retaining wall over modern materials is that they allow the movement of moisture through the wall. If you have ever seen a concrete block wall with cement render that is holding a garden level and is cracked, that is a perfect example of why drystone retaining walls are far superior. 

Built using natural materials such as local stone, these walls are strong, effective, significantly more environmentally friendly than man made materials and look stunning. We can build vertical or horizontal walls, slate coping, cock and hen styled, flat slate capped, whatever you require.

Reclaimed dry stone walls are our speciality using local stone, removing, rebuilding and using the same stone from an existing drystone wall or sourcing local stone from nearby sources. Ideal for heritage properties, barn conversions using reclaimed stone from the original barn, we have even used reclaimed pebbles to create a stone wall in Clovelly within strict heritage specifications. Fireplaces are also a speciality and we have built several traditional inglenook fireplaces using original stone.

Freestanding drystone walls are typically boundary walls for homes and beautiful gardens, often found on farms as boundaries, our freestanding drystone walls are found throughout Devon. From a garden feature in a specific design, to typical farm walls, these walls look fantastic, stand for centuries and create a boundary for whatever you need.
